Ambrose Bierce wurde 1842 in Ohio geboren und begann nach dem Ende des Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieges eine Karriere als Journalist. Berühmt wurde er durch seine meisterhaften Kurzgeschichten und Erzählungen. 1913 ging er nach Mexiko, wo er auf rätselhafte Weise spurlos verschwand.
