Provides an introduction to the complex chemistry of heterocycles and an overview of the many and varied applications of this versatile class of compounds. The only book to examine the multidisciplinary applications of heterocycles, it features descriptions of the impact of heterocyclic compounds in living organisms: in the structure of DNA, enzymes and proteins, vitamins and antibodies and their role in plants and animals. The use of the compounds in the chemical industry is also covered. It is written in non-technical language by top researchers and includes problems at the end of each chapter.
Alan Katritzky, educated at Oxford, held faculty positions at Cambridge and East Anglia before migrating in 1980 to the University of Florida, where he is Kenan Professor and Director for the Institutefor Heterocyclic Compounds. He has trained some 800 graduate students and post-docs, and lectured and consulted world-wide. He led the team, which produced Comprehensive Heterocyclic Chemistry and its sequel CHECII, has edited Advances in Heterocyclic Chemistry, Vols. 1 through 86 and conceived the plan for Comprehensive Organic Functional Group Transformations. He founded Arkat-USA, a non-profit which publishes Archive for Organic Chemistry (ARKIVOC) electronic journal completely free to authors and readers at. Honors include 11 honorary doctorates from 8 countries and membership or foreign membership of the National Academies of Britain, Catalonia, India, Poland, Russia and Slovenia.
