This is a comparative study of defensible space and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) as applied in the USA and the UK, focusing particularly on the urban experience. It sets out these initiatives in the context of other major types of crime-reduction strategies. In looking at the quality of life in two of the world's major open societies, this comparative perspective provides a broadly-based introduction to a multi-disciplinary field of high public visibility and concern.
