1807 and 1835. Washington Irving was the first American literary artist to earn his living solely through his writings and is considered to be the Father of the American Short Story. Salmagundi is a collection of humorous and satirical essays. In search of colorful material, he made a journey to the frontier and wrote about the American West in A Tour of the Prairies.
