Tajik is the official language of Tajikistan, where it is the mother tongue of 65 percent of the population. Millions more ethnic Tajiks reside in adjacent areas of Afghanistan and Uzbekistan, and it has historically been the language of the ancient Silk Road cities of Samarqand and Bukhara, also in what is now Uzbekistan. A form of Persian, Tajik has retained numerous archaic features, and differs from the dialects of Iran and Afghanistan in its use of the Cyrillic alphabet. This bilingual dictionary, with over 8,000 entries, is a useful tool for non-Tajiks visiting Central Asia and Tajik students of English. All Tajik entries appear in both the Cyrillic alphabet and romanized transliteration. The book contains a pronunciation guide and transliteration system for the Tajik Cyrillic alphabet.
