Excerpt from book: ' EPITOME OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS FOR DECEMBER, 1816. We have peculiar satisfaction in calling the attention of our fair readers to meetings, convened by the chief magistrate in the metropolis, and by the opulent in various parts of the kingdom, for relieving the distresses of the suffering poor; but none more so than the laudable example of the Ladies of Leicester, who have formed themselves into a committee, and resolved? " That as the services of the ladies can be usefully employed in this benevolent work, an Association of Ladies be now formed to superintend the faithful application of such funds as may be placed at their disposal, for supplying articles of wearmg apparel to the industrious and distressed poor. " That a primary object;vith this Association shall be to ascertain the degree of want, in regard to clothing, which now prevails in the town; and that, for this purpose, the town be divided into districts; and that ladies be requested to take charge of these districts, and to visit all the houses of the poor, and to make a return of such particulars as are required in the form now produced." Donations have been liberally contributed; and this benevolent example, so worthy of the fair sex and of imitation, will, we hope and trust, be generally followed: ?On no occasion, were such exertions and benevolence more required; nor will they, we hope, be relaxed, till the legislature has done something more permanent and effective.
