It leaves great, torn gaps in their souls, which heal slowly into huge scars. Mayhap, it is the natural effort to hide these which makes a man turn farceur. At least, so it must have been with Jean-Claude. No one ever knew the real Jean-Claude deep inside this handsome, witty man, who laughed always. "Yes," they said, "he has talent," and then, shrugging their shoulders, "but he will never use it, this Jean-Claude, always joking as he is?no, never in this world." As for the world- to-come, many of them did not believe in it, and those who did, never assigned Jean-Claude a place there, much less prominence. But as they were narrow minds, it made no difference, however you looked at it. Even if higher authorities than they had informed him, that his name was not on the list of the chosen, it would have elicited from Jean-Claude no more than a remark. This, however, would have been enough to send those blessed agents fluttering back with all haste to engrave it in the Doomsday Book. For nothing good can be lost in heaven. Natures of this kind, like mountains which baffle a complete view of their grandness, are full of contrast. This man, who was continually building castles in the air only to blow them up Che next moment with his own gunpowder, liked peace. A strange thing how peace and the restlessness of the ocean run often hand in hand. This is what brought him to Senlis, and, incidentally, to Mina. She was sitting on one of the stones of the old Roman amphitheatre above a low arch.
