McDougall and the Clover Club Walter McDougall, the famous newspaper c. artoonist, was invited to the last dinner of the Clover Club, Philadelphia's famous dining organization, and in reply he sent a tentative acceptance, saying that "Unless my courage fails me at the last moment. I will be there." This was accompanied with a cartoon of McDougall himself armed cap-a-pie, and bearing a battle-axe and a life preserver, all indicative of the thought that the man who went to a Clover Club feast took his life in his hands. This gives expression to a popular and unfortunate delusion about a set of as mild-mannered men as ever cut a throat or scuttled ship. The cartoonist did not lose his courage, put feet under the mahogany, had a good and amiable time and found his armor and his weapons of offence and defence unnecessary. Here is a reproduction of his letter replying to the invitation he received: -- Cartoonist Nast Was Too Wary McDougall was not the first to reply to a Clover Club invitation by a drawing. Nineteen years ago, in January, 1883, the greatest cartoonist and caricaturist of his day. THOMAS NAST WILL NOT BITE. and probably unequaled since, Thomas Nast -- the man who made Boss Tweed infamous HEARD SEEN on the front page of Harper's Weekly -- from AND his home in Moorestown, N. J., sent a declina- HBARD tion to a Clover Club invitation to its annual dinner that contained no letter at all, yet there was no mistaking its meaning.
